The Math: Five Exams, One Semester
Each CLEP exam costs $97, plus your test center's fee, and a pass usually skips one 3-credit course. Colleges charge tuition by the semester, so the money comes when your credits finish a whole semester (15 credits) early: that is about $6,500 to $16,000 of tuition, from a public four-year to a mid-tier private. Request College Board to send your official score to your school. Credits appear on your transcript within weeks.
The Military Advantage
If you're active duty, National Guard, or Reserve, DANTES (Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support) funds one attempt at each exam, with no limit on how many different exams you take. A retake is yours to pay for, after a three-month wait.

- Test at on-base education centers, another CLEP test center, or by remote proctoring
- Military training + CLEP credits stack with GI Bill benefits

The strategy: earn as many CLEP credits as possible while on active duty (free), then use your GI Bill for the remaining courses. Every course you clear by CLEP is one you don't take on your GI Bill, so your months of entitlement stretch further. If you pay for a CLEP exam yourself after service, VA can pay back the test fee and charges your entitlement only for the amount it reimburses.
